Hey, it’s Andrew, and this is Safety on Tap.
Since you’re listening in, you must be a leader wanting to grow yourself and drastically improve health and safety along the way.  Welcome to you, you’re in the right place.  If this is your first time listening in, thanks for joining us and well done for trying something different to improve! And of course, welcome back to all of you wonderful regular listeners.
I’m very excited about this episode, it feels like the very first podcast episode I ever did.  Today you will hear, for the first time ever, in the world as far as I am aware, a real, live coaching conversation via podcast.
The way this came about really comes from me reflecting on how I can improve how the Safety on Tap podcast helps move you, yes you, to grow, to improve, and become more effective.  That has always been my mission here, for you, and I wondered if I could amp it up, raise the stakes, turbocharge it if you will.
Regular listeners will know me for passionately spruiking and putting into practice a few key concepts.  First, that better learning leads to more growth and ultimately better performance.  Second, that better learning is tapping into the wealth and social and experiential sources we have available, which contrasts to the wealth of plain old information, of which there is no shortage, and it only contributes a small amount to our learning, growth, and performance.  And third, two of my most favourite, and in my opinion most effective, ways to leverage social and experiential learning is through coaching, which is heavily centered on reflection.
Ironically I feel like kind of a slow learner, that it only took me two years and 100 episodes for the light-bulb to go on, and for me to bring coaching and podcast together as one.
So here we are! These episodes, the title of which I will prefix with the words ‘coaching call’, I know I spent a long time with the marketing department working on that one, so you can see them easily in your podcast feed, as distinct from interviews and my solo episodes.
My intention here is to help supercharge your learning and action.  Just because I’m coaching one person, doesn’t mean that you won’t find really helpful takeaways from the specific challenge or opportunity we work through, but in the way, we go about the coaching process.
Can you let me know what you think? Post a comment on this episode over at safetyontap.com/ep104.  I would love to hear what you think.
Without further ado, here’s our very first live coaching podcast.

Well, sounds like Steffan made some great progress in his challenge, and with some really clear actions to take to move forward.
It’s funny about topics like this one, data, metrics, reporting and all that, how easily we get lured into a one-size fits all solution.  The obsession decades ago with lag indicators, and then the apparent epiphany to use lead indicators, and even now people talking about the really valid downsides of these.  So what’s the solution? I think that was the big takeaway for me in this episode, is to intellectually yourself and your function and your leaders, to ask those three simple questions: ‘what, so what, now what’? I love how Steffan was dissatisfied with existing indicators, and you could tell his thinking was already taking him down the path of curiosity to explore what insights he wanted the data and reporting to explore.  We were able to draw that out and make it really explicit, and the Christmas time example was a beauty to do that.
Let me know what you think about this episode, and let’s have a conversation over at safetyontap.com/ep104
Thanks also to Chez6018 for your 5-star review on iTunes.  She says Thanks Andrew for informative and challenging content.  I love the way you encourage listeners to reflect n what they have heard and determine ways they can out new ideas into practice.  One thing I’d like to learn more about is positive KPI’s that can replace the traditional lag indicators such as injury rates.  Cheryl.
Thanks, Cheryl for your review, I hope this episode scratched that itch for you a little, and I have some ideas to cover this topic down the track a little more, listen out for that.
