Love them or hate them, health and safety regulators are a part of our professional life.  Understanding them, challenging them, and working with them, seems critical to our success.  Listen in as I have a surprisingly honest conversation with Martyn Campbell, Executive Director of Safework SA.

Hey, it’s Andrew, and this is Safety on Tap.

Since you’re listening in, you must be a leader wanting to grow yourself and drastically improve health and safety along the way.  Welcome to you, you’re in the right place.  If this is your first time listening in, thanks for joining us and well done for trying something different to improve! And of course welcome back to all of you wonderful regular listeners.
This episode is brought to you by the Safety Institute of Australia’s Safetyscape Convention.
Martyn will be sharing his insights about regulation, change, and the future in a panel discussion I will be hosting at the 2019 Safetyscape convention, part of the new events offering from the Safety Institute of Australia on from the 21st to 23rd of May in Sydney.  The #SAFETYSCAPE Convention brings together a range of industry partners committed to health and safety to assemble as the largest gathering of Health & Safety professionals across a program of events, workshops, forums.  At the centre of the overall convention is the Safety Institute of Australia’s own two day National Health & Safety Conference: Back to the Future along with the Workplace Health & Safety Show.
But don’t forget, as I’ve been saying for a while – most of your learning and in turn performance will come from social and experiential learning – so whilst the knowledge you will gain will be great, it’s even better to meet new peers and strengthen relationships with your network, share stories and reflections from your own experience.  I hope to see you in the audience, please come and say hello.

Let’s jump into my chat with Martyn:

Don’t forget to check out safetyscape.com.au and grab your ticket to the National Health and Safety Conference, or the Workplace Health and Safety Show.  I’ll be at the conference, I hope to see you there!
The big takeaway for me from this conversation is that it was surprisingly honest.  Martyn is gaining a reputation for a straight talker, without ego or bluster or vanilla middle of the road policy-esque commentary.  Honest conversations with our Regulators, help us understand each other, our respective contexts, and what we’re working towards.  I myself have been known to be intentionally evasive, maybe passive aggressive, when it comes to regulators.  I wish that conversations like this, and the panel discussion at the upcoming conference, were available when I was a much younger professional.  How are you engaging with your regulators?

Thanks so much for listening.  Until next time, what’s the one thing you’ll do to take positive, effective or rewarding action, to grow yourself, and drastically improve health and safety along the way? Seeya!
